Abstract
This study examines and critically edits a chapter extracted from Al-Taḥṣīl wa al-Tamthīl li-Aḥkām Kitāb al-Tashīl. The research is divided into two main sections: a study section and a critical edition section.
The study section comprises two parts. The first presents a biographical account of the author, Aḥmad ibn Saʿd al-Andarashī (d. 750 AH), including his lineage, birth, upbringing, moral character, scholarly reputation, teachers and students, works, and date of death. The second part addresses poetic necessities in al-Andarashī’s thought, discussing his purpose in composing this chapter, his concept of poetic necessity, the relationship between this chapter and its counterpart in Sharḥ al-Jumal by Ibn ʿAṣfūr, and his methodological approach to presenting poetic necessities.
The critical edition section opens with an introduction that examines the attribution of the chapter to the commentary and its author, clarifies its title, and provides a detailed description of the sole extant manuscript. It also outlines the editorial principles and annotation methodology adopted in establishing the text, followed by the critically edited text itself.
This chapter constitutes a section on the rulings of detached forms (ḥukm al-munfaṣil). It was composed as a supplementary addition to the text of Tashīl al-Fawāʾid, intended to elaborate and expand upon issues that were treated concisely therein, while remaining independent in both subject matter and content. Al-Andarashī regarded it as essential for students of Arabic grammar. Its material is primarily derived from Sharḥ al-Jumal by Ibn ʿAṣfūr, which he refined and reorganized to suit the pedagogical needs of his students and the scholarly context of his time.
