Abstract

Research Topic: The illocutionary force in the Sermon of the Battle of Hunayn: an applied study based on Searle’s Speech Act Theory.

Research Objectives: This study aims to examine the illocutionary force of speech acts in the Sermon of the Battle of Hunayn, based on Speech Act Theory as one of the fundamental frameworks in pragmatic studies.

Methodology: The study adopts an analytical pragmatic approach to investigate speech acts in the Sermon of the Battle of Hunayn, focusing on their illocutionary force within their contextual and communicative use.

Key Findings: • Directive speech acts were prominently used in the sermon, carrying a strong illocutionary force aimed at drawing the attention of the Ansar to the sermon’s content and addressing reports conveyed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) regarding them.

• Declarations appeared in a limited form; however, they played a significant illocutionary role by influencing the Ansar and contributing to a shift in their attitude toward the distribution of war booty (ghanīmah).

Recommendations: The study recommends greater attention to Prophetic discourse from a pragmatic perspective, as it demonstrates a strong illocutionary force grounded in communicative intent, ensuring the effectiveness and success of linguistic action. Keywords: illocutionary force, Sermon of the Battle of Hunayn, Searle’s Speech Act Theory.
