The Objectives of Shariah in Safeguarding the Tongue:Its Concept and Impact

The tongue is the instrument of speech and the means of expression. It serves as a guide that restrains people from evil and directs them toward what is good. Its benefits are immense, yet so too are the dangers and harms that may result from its misuse. Through the tongue, a person may attain honour and distinction or fall into ruin and destruction.

This study examines the concept of the objectives of Shariah (Maqasid al-Shariah) in safeguarding the tongue and explores their impact from both the positive and preventive perspectives through the commands and prohibitions of Islamic law. Commands and prohibitions constitute one of the principal sources from which the objectives of Shariah are derived. Wherever divine commands exist, benefit is intended; wherever prohibitions exist, corruption and harm are prevented.

The study highlights the role of the objectives of Shariah in regulating verbal conduct and demonstrates that safeguarding the tongue aims to promote and maximize benefits while preventing and minimizing harm
