Abstract

Muhammad bin Omar Al-Nawawi Al-Jawi (d. 1316 AH) was one of the distinguished scholars of his time who travelled to Makkah, resided in the Holy Mosque, and taught there. This study examines the doctrinal impact and the influence of the theological school (Ahl al-Kalam) on his views, as well as his stance in determining the attributes of Allah through his interpretation Al-Tafsir al-Munir li-Ma‘alim al-Tanzil al-Musfir ‘an Wujooh Mahasin al-Ta’wil (Marah Labid li-Kashf Ma‘na al-Qur’an al-Majid). The aim of this study is to assess the extent to which his interpretations align or differ from the creed of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama‘ah (the people of the Sunnah and the community).
