Abstract

This study addresses the issues related to the verse of treasure:

“And those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend it in the way of Allah...” (At-Tawbah: 34)

The research first clarifies the intended meaning of “those” mentioned in the verse, then explains the concepts of hoarding and spending. It concludes with an examination of how to reconcile the revelation of this verse in the ninth year of the Hijrah with the authentic report from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that it was revealed before the obligation of zakat.

These constitute four main issues, which were analyzed, edited, and discussed according to different scholarly opinions. The study then presents what appeared to the researcher as correct, following an analytical approach.

One of the most important findings is that the report from Ibn Umar may give the impression that the details of zakat were revealed only after this verse, whereas the correct understanding is that the ruling applied to those who hoarded wealth before the amounts of zakat were determined, not that the obligation of zakat itself was revealed later than this verse.

The study also recommends historical examination of the effects mentioned in the warnings against mere hoarding of wealth, careful attention to verses containing disputed scholarly opinions, and the verification and dissemination of scholarly works on such verses for public benefit.
