The Statements of Shaykh Muhammad Al-Shawi on the Distortion of Qur’anic Meanings:A Compilation and Study

This research aims to introduce Muhammad Al-Shawi and his general methodology in his Qur’anic exegesis Al-Nafahat Al-Makkiyyah fi Tafsir Kalam Rabb Al-Bariyyah, and to present his statements concerning the distortion of Qur’anic meanings and his position toward them.

One of the most important findings of the research is that the distorted meanings are mainly related to matters of creed. This—Allah knows best—is due to Shaykh Al-Shawi’s particular concern with clarifying the creed of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama‘ah. The study also shows that Shaykh Al-Shawi did not consistently mention the sources and causes of such distortions, although he did refer to them in some cases. In addition, he discussed certain distorted meanings and clarified their invalidity.

The research also highlights the importance of addressing distorted meanings in general Qur’anic commentaries in order to demonstrate their errors and protect the correct understanding of the Qur’an
