Abstract
This study examines the instances in which anomalous Qur’anic readings (al-qirāʾāt al-shādhdhah) are cited as evidence to support the canonical mutawātir Farshī readings in Al-Durra al-Farīda fī Sharḥ al-Qaṣīda by al-Muntaǧab al-Hamadhānī (d. 643 AH), covering the section from Sūrat al-Aḥzāb to the end of the Holy Qur’an.
The study aims to identify and classify the anomalous readings employed by al-Muntaǧab al-Hamadhānī in supporting the mutawātir readings, to clarify his methodological approach, and to analyze the linguistic and semantic dimensions of the cited anomalous readings and their evidential function.
The research adopts an inductive, descriptive, and analytical methodology in examining the collected instances. The findings reveal that al-Muntaǧab al-Hamadhānī followed a precise and systematic approach in employing anomalous readings as supporting evidence, using expressions such as “taʿḍuduhu” (it supports it) and “tanṣuruhu” (it strengthens it).
He consistently attributed anomalous readings to their original transmitters, particularly the Companions, demonstrating scholarly precision and reliability in transmission. In the selected portion of the study, fifteen instances were identified in which anomalous readings were used as supporting evidence, while the total number in Al-Durra al-Farīda reached 106 instances. These instances reflect his breadth of knowledge and analytical depth in the field of Qur’anic readings and their justification.
The study concludes that al-Muntaǧab al-Hamadhānī’s methodology represents a distinguished model of precision in the use of anomalous readings as evidential support for canonical readings. It recommends further studies on scholarly methodologies in the employment of anomalous Qur’anic readings in interpretive and evidential contexts.
