Abstract
This study examines the tribal and collectivist determinants of marital partner selection in Saudi society, focusing on gender differences. Using a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews from 30 participants, the findings reveal that family plays a central role in partner selection, overriding individual preferences. Strict social norms limit premarital communication, and marriages within the family are preferred to maintain social compatibility and lineage purity. These restrictions contribute to marital issues, including emotional incompatibility and increased divorce rates. While gender disparities exist in the early stages of partner selection, marriage criteria are largely imposed equally on both sexes.
