AI and technology have increased interest and engagement in learning; therefore, paying attention to AI as an educational tool is crucial. The more sophisticated AI tools become, the more important it is to rethink how they can be used to enhance learning and education, not just for current goals but also for future educational and technological goals. The study aims to discover the challenges that Saudi university students face when using AI tools in personalized learning. The study followed a mixed-methods approach using a convergent design to answer the research questions. Quantitative data were processed using the SPSS statistical package, descriptive questions were answered using the arithmetic mean, and differences were calculated using the Mann–Whitney nonparametric test due to the nonnormal distribution of the data. Stratified random sampling was used to select a sample of 456 students from the humanities and applied disciplines in three major and emerging Saudi universities. The findings indicated that Saudi university students use AI tools in their personalized learning, which have a highly positive effect on their learning experience. They are also aware of the challenges posed by AI tools and are willing to continue using them
