Abstract

Abstract:
The present study aimed to explore the primary challenges associated with assessing the academic achievement of students with hearing impairments in Jordanian universities, as perceived by the students themselves. Additionally, the study investigated the effects of gender and severity of hearing loss on students' perceptions of these challenges.

A descriptive research design was employed. The study sample consisted of all students with hearing impairments (N = 46), selected purposefully from the Student Counseling Departments affiliated with the Deanships of Student Affairs at various Jordanian universities. Two instruments were developed to assess the challenges faced in academic achievement evaluation. The researcher utilized sign language and conducted face-to-face interviews to collect responses to both the quantitative and qualitative instruments.

The quantitative instrument included 34 items distributed across three domains: challenges related to semester examinations, coursework assignments, and classroom participation. The qualitative instrument consisted of 9 open-ended questions designed to capture in-depth insights into the difficulties experienced by students in the academic assessment process.

The findings revealed that challenges related to semester examinations was high and classroom participation were perceived as moderate. Moreover, no statistically significant differences were found in the perceived challenges based on gender or the severity of hearing impairment. The study concluded with a recommendation to adapt academic assessment methods to better accommodate the needs of students with hearing impairments, thereby ensuring fair and valid evaluations.
